After 800 years of quiet, Fagradalsfjall erupted in March 2021 and has since produced further eruptions in 2022, 2023, and ongoing activity in the Sundhnúksgígar fissure system. The result is an expanding lava field about an hour from Reykjavík that is genuinely new terrain — raw black lava, still-steaming vents, and a scale that photographs do not prepare you for. Several marked trails leave from two parking areas. The shortest viewpoint route is around 2.5 km one way; longer trails to earlier eruption sites run 6–8 km one way. Terrain is uneven lava and gravel with steep sections — good boots are essential. Parking costs 1,000 ISK via the Parka.is app. If an eruption is active, check Visit Reykjanes and the Icelandic Met Office for real-time access updates. One safety point worth taking seriously: fresh-looking lava can have a paper-thin crust over still-molten rock, so stay on marked paths. Sulfur dioxide can spike without warning — check the air quality forecast before setting out. The peninsula is exposed and cold even in summer; bring wind layers.
