Esja Capital Peak
Capital Region
wikimediaEsja's flat-topped ridge defines Reykjavík's northern skyline and sits only about 10 kilometers from the city center — close enough that locals run its trails after work. The mountain tops out at 914 meters, but the most popular goal is Þverfellshorn at 780 meters, where a large boulder called Steinn marks a natural turnaround point. From there the views sweep across Faxaflói bay and the capital. Continuing to the actual summit involves rougher scrambling terrain. The trailhead at Esjustofa has a café, toilets, and free parking. Multiple routes head uphill from there, ranging from a well-graded family-friendly path to steeper direct lines. Round trip to Þverfellshorn takes roughly two to three hours at a steady pace. Esja is technically open year-round, but the upper trails can be icy enough in winter to require crampons. Weather on the ridge changes fast regardless of season — a windproof layer is worth bringing even on a warm summer day in Reykjavík. The mountain is free to hike.
