At around 2 AM on January 23, 1973, a volcanic fissure opened less than 200 meters from the edge of Heimaey town. Within hours, the entire population of roughly 5,300 people had evacuated to the mainland. The eruption lasted five months, burying around 400 buildings under lava and ash. Eldheimar was built around one of those houses — left exactly as archaeologists found it, volcanic debris still filling the rooms, a domestic interior frozen at the moment of evacuation. The museum pairs this preserved house with exhibits, survivor testimonies, film footage, and documentation of the decision to pump cold seawater onto the advancing lava to save the harbor. That improvised operation is examined in satisfying detail; without the harbor, the island had no economic future. Plan about an hour. Getting to the Westman Islands requires a 35-minute ferry from Landeyjahöfn on the South Coast or a short flight from Reykjavík. The ferry can be rough in bad weather, so leave room in your schedule.
