Djúpivogur
East
ChensiyuanAlong the harbor breakwater at Djúpivogur, 34 oversized granite eggs sit on stone pedestals facing the sea — one for each bird species that breeds locally. The installation, Eggin í Gleðivík (The Eggs of Merry Bay), was created by artist Sigurður Guðmundsson and placed here in 2009. The 900-meter coastal walk to see them is free and open at any hour. The harbor's red-painted Langabúð warehouse dates to 1790 and is one of Iceland's oldest commercial buildings, now housing a cultural center with local history exhibitions and sculpture. From June through August, boat tours run to Papey island — about 15 km offshore, uninhabited since 1966, with a puffin colony and a wooden church from 1807. Búlandstindur, a near-perfect pyramid peak rising to 1,069 meters, dominates the view behind the village. Djúpivogur is on the Ring Road between Höfn and the Eastfjords, with fuel, accommodation, and a restaurant. An hour covers the egg walk and harbor area.
