Ice breaks off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, drifts through the Jökulsárlón lagoon, and washes out through the channel onto a stretch of black volcanic sand directly across Route 1. What ends up on Diamond Beach (Fellsfjara) ranges from fist-sized chunks to blocks the size of a small car; deep compression inside the glacier gives some pieces an electric blue tint. The beach rearranges itself every tide, so what you find in the morning is gone or shifted by afternoon. Ice concentrations tend to be greatest from late autumn through early spring, though ice appears year-round. Two car parks serve the site and fill quickly in peak season — arriving before mid-morning or after dinner helps. Toilets are in the main lot. Sneaker waves are a documented hazard: multiple visitors have been knocked down by waves reaching farther up the sand than expected. Stay well back from the waterline, never turn your back on the sea for long, and don't climb on the ice — even large grounded pieces can roll without warning. Jökulsárlón lagoon is a short walk away and most people pair both in a single stop.
