The Crystal Ice Cave sits inside Breiðamerkurjökull, the outlet glacier responsible for Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, roughly 380 km east of Reykjavík along Route 1. Entry is by guided tour only — it is illegal and unsafe to enter independently. Tours depart from the Jökulsárlón meeting point in super jeeps with oversized tires that carry visitors across the glacier margin to the cave entrance, a 15–20 minute ride over uneven terrain. Guides supply helmets and crampons; the total outing runs about 2–3 hours. Inside, compressed glacier ice absorbs longer red wavelengths and transmits blue light, producing walls that range from pale aquamarine to a deep saturated blue depending on ice thickness and the angle of natural light. The ice at the terminus is approximately 1,200 years old. Because the cave is carved by meltwater each summer and refreezes each winter, its exact shape, size, and location shift from year to year, and operators select which cave to visit based on daily safety assessments. Minimum age is typically 6–10 years depending on the operator. Prices start around 19,990 ISK per adult with operators such as Glacier Guides, Arctic Adventures, and Blue Iceland. Visitors drive paved Route 1 to Jökulsárlón and do not need a 4x4 of their own, as the glacier transport is provided.
