The Blue Lagoon sits in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50 km from Reykjavík and 20 km from Keflavík Airport — a location that suits it as a first or last stop. The water is a by-product of the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant: when the hot brine cools, silica particles scatter blue light and give the whole surface its pale cyan color. Water temperature holds at 37–39°C year-round, and the white silica mud on the bottom is used as a face mask. The complex includes an in-water bar, steam rooms, saunas, and a restaurant overlooking the water. Advance booking is essential — the lagoon regularly sells out weeks ahead, especially in summer. Entry tiers range from basic admission to packages with robes, towels, and treatments. The Retreat offers a private, higher-end experience within the same complex. The Reykjanes region has been geologically active since late 2023, with eruptions near Grindavík forcing periodic closures.
