The Holuhraun lava field — created by Bárðarbunga's 2014–2015 eruption — is the largest lava flow Iceland has seen since Laki erupted in 1783. Over six months, roughly 85 square kilometers of fresh black rock formed north of Vatnajökull, reshaping terrain that had been empty highland tundra. The caldera itself sits buried under the northwestern portion of Vatnajökull, beneath around 850 meters of ice, with its floor roughly 700 meters deep and its diameter spanning about 11 kilometers. During the eruption, the caldera floor dropped more than 50 meters as magma drained northward through a subterranean dike. Getting to Holuhraun requires a serious commitment. The access route runs across the F-roads of the central Highlands — loose gravel, river crossings, no services — and is only reliably passable between July and September. Organized super jeep tours from Reykjavík or Akureyri are the practical choice for most visitors; independent travel demands a high-clearance 4x4, experience with river fords, and careful planning. The reward is an otherworldly landscape of cracked, ochre-tinged lava with fumaroles still venting steam and sulfur. This remains one of Iceland's most geologically raw destinations, and it doesn't reward the unprepared. Check road conditions at vegagerdin.is before setting out, carry extra fuel, and treat the surface gently — it fractures under careless footfall.
