Bæjarfoss tumbles down the steep mountainside directly above Ísafjörður, close enough that you can see it from the town's older streets. It's one of the most accessible waterfalls in the Westfjords — no drive required, no trail fee, just a walk from the town center. The falls carry snowmelt and mountain stream water, so flow is strongest in late spring and early summer; by late August it has often thinned considerably. In winter the cascade can partially freeze into dramatic ice formations. The walk up to a viewpoint near the base takes around 20 to 30 minutes each way on a path that gains elevation quickly. Wear footwear with grip — the trail becomes muddy or icy depending on season — and expect some scrambling on the upper section. The views back down over the fjord, the colorful corrugated-iron rooftops of Ísafjörður, and the mountains closing in on either side are a fair reward in themselves. This is an easy half-day add-on for anyone spending a night or two in Ísafjörður. The town has a small but functional tourist information center that can point you toward the current trailhead and advise on conditions. No facilities at the waterfall itself, but Ísafjörður has cafes and services a short walk away.
