Iceland's only native land mammal has its own dedicated research centre in the village of Súðavík in the Westfjords. The Arctic Fox Centre opened in 2010 as a non-profit focused on the Arctic fox — its biology, population dynamics, and complicated history with humans, who hunted it heavily for fur before protections arrived. An outdoor enclosure gives visitors a close look at a live fox, typically a rescued animal that cannot be released. Súðavík was hit by an avalanche in January 1995 that killed 14 people including eight children — one of two deadly Westfjords avalanches that winter, a disaster that changed Iceland's approach to avalanche risk. The centre acknowledges this history, adding weight to what might otherwise feel purely nature-focused. Súðavík sits about 30 km south of Ísafjörður on paved road, a natural stop on any Westfjords loop. Open May through September (hours vary by month), with access by arrangement in winter — confirm before visiting. For wild fox encounters, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is the best option; foxes there are unhunted and unusually approachable.
