Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyjarfoss photoBy Andreas Tille

Aldeyjarfoss drops roughly 20 meters on the Skjálfandafljót river into a wide pool, but the drop is almost secondary to what surrounds it: a tight ring of hexagonal basalt columns set against churning white water in a way that looks almost constructed. The columns formed as thick lava from the Bárðarbunga volcanic system cooled and cracked. Because it sits well into the highlands, visitor numbers stay modest even in peak season. Getting here requires a 4WD. The standard approach follows Route 842 south through Bárðardalur valley, then turns onto the F26 Sprengisandur highland road for a few kilometers to a parking area with toilets. A short track leads down to the falls. An alternative northern-bank viewpoint is accessible off Route 842 near the farm Stóratunga, avoiding the F-road entirely. The season is June through September; F26 closes in winter, though walking in from Road 842 is possible in calm conditions. The site is free with no facilities beyond car park toilets. The long, low-angle light during midnight sun hours brings out the basalt column texture particularly well.
