About 85 km south of the Arctic Circle, the Akureyri Botanical Garden is one of the world's northernmost botanical gardens — and the fact that it needs no greenhouse for most of its plants reflects Akureyri's unusually mild microclimate. Its origins go back to 1910, when local women founded a Park Association and secured land from the city; it opened in 1912. Today it covers around 3.6 hectares with over 7,000 plant species, including native Icelandic flora, alpine plants, an arboretum, and what is claimed to be the northernmost rose collection in the world. Entry is free, and the garden is a genuine local favorite on warm afternoons. Winding paths connect the themed sections, benches are scattered throughout, and a small café operates in summer. The best season is June through September when the garden is in full bloom; outside those months it is open but quieter and the café is closed. From central Akureyri it is a short drive or an uphill walk. An hour covers it comfortably — more if you linger in the rose section. A natural stop before heading further into north Iceland.
