Seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland

When and where the aurora is best, how to read the forecast, and how to photograph it without getting frostbite.

Northern lights are not a tourist attraction with opening hours. They are a weather phenomenon driven by the sun, attenuated by Earth's magnetic field, and obscured by clouds and city light. You don't buy a ticket to see them; you buy probability. This guide is about understanding the variables you control (where, when, how dark) and accepting the ones you don't (the sun's mood, Iceland's cloud cover).

When the aurora is visible in Iceland

Iceland sits at roughly 64°–66° N — squarely inside the auroral oval, which means displays can happen any night the sky is dark and the sun is throwing charged particles in our direction. In practice, that means:

  • Season: mid-September through mid-March. From early April to late August the sky is too bright; the aurora is still happening physically, you just can't see it.
  • Time of night: peak hours are roughly 9 pm to 2 am, though strong displays can run any time after full dark.
  • Realistic odds: on a 7-night trip in the core season, you have roughly a 60–75% chance of at least one good viewing night, assuming you actively look. That number drops sharply in November (clouds) and rises in clearer months like February and March.

The two forecasts you need

There are two independent things that determine whether you see anything: solar activity (will the aurora be strong?) and weather (will the sky be clear?). You need to check both.

Solar activity: the Kp index

The Kp index runs from 0 to 9 and roughly measures geomagnetic disturbance. For Iceland's latitude, you can see the aurora at Kp 2 or higher given dark, clear skies. Kp 3–4 produces solid green displays. Kp 5+ is classed as a geomagnetic storm and tends to push aurora visibility further south, sometimes producing the spectacular pulsing curtains people travel for. The Icelandic Met Office publishes a localized 3-day aurora forecast at vedur.is/aurora with a scale of 0–9 specifically tuned for Iceland.

Cloud cover

The same vedur.is forecast page shows expected cloud cover by region for the night ahead. Even a strong Kp number is useless under solid overcast. The trick is finding a hole in the clouds — if Reykjavík is socked in but the South Coast is clear, that's where you go. Be willing to drive 30–90 minutes from your base chasing clearer skies; many of the best aurora photos are from people who moved.

Where to look

Two things matter: minimal light pollution and a clear view to the north. Beyond that, Iceland is so dark in winter that almost anywhere outside town will work.

  • From Reykjavík: drive to Grótta lighthouse on the Seltjarnarnes peninsula (15 min). It's the darkest spot reachable from the city, with a view north over the bay. Better still: head to Þingvellir or out toward the Reykjanes peninsula.
  • South Coast: anywhere east of Selfoss is dark. Vík beach, Reynisfjara (carefully — the waves are deadly), Jökulsárlón, and the Skaftafell area are all spectacular foregrounds.
  • North: Mývatn and the surrounding countryside have some of Iceland's darkest skies and best statistical odds in winter, partly because the north sees less coastal cloud. Akureyri itself is bright; get out of town.
  • Wherever your accommodation is: step outside every couple of hours after dark. Some of the best displays happen when the forecast said nothing.

Tour or DIY?

Aurora bus tours from Reykjavík cost around 8,000–12,000 ISK and typically include a free re-book if the night fails. They're a fine choice if you don't have a car, or if you don't want to drive on Icelandic winter roads at night.

Caveats: tour buses go to the same handful of spots, you're on the operator's timing, and you'll often be standing in a parking lot with 80 other people pointed in the same direction. If you have a rental car and confidence on winter roads, you'll see more, more often, by checking the forecast nightly and chasing clear skies yourself.

Photographing the aurora

Modern phones can do a credible job of aurora photography in their dedicated night modes. For a real photograph, you need three things and nothing more:

  • A camera with manual mode — mirrorless or DSLR, almost any model from the last decade.
  • A wide, fast lens — 14–24mm at f/2.8 is the sweet spot. f/4 still works.
  • A tripod. Non-negotiable. The wind in Iceland can wobble even a sturdy tripod, so stake it down or shield it with your body.

Reasonable starting settings:

  • ISO 1600–3200
  • Aperture wide open (f/2.8 or f/4)
  • Shutter 5–15 seconds (shorter if the aurora is moving fast)
  • Manual focus set to infinity (autofocus fails in the dark)
  • RAW format, white balance around 3500–4000K

Bring spare batteries and keep them inside your jacket. Cold drains lithium-ion batteries fast; a phone or camera that read 60% indoors can die at 15% outdoors in 20 minutes. Cycle batteries between an inside pocket and the camera.

What to wear

You will be standing still, in the dark, in winter, often somewhere with wind. This is the worst-case scenario for cold injury — not because the temperatures are extreme by Arctic standards (Iceland is rarely below −10°C) but because you stop moving. Wear what you'd wear to ski plus an extra mid-layer. A windproof shell is more important than a heavily insulated parka. Cover your face, wear two pairs of gloves (a thin liner that lets you operate a camera, and a thick mitt over the top), and bring a thermos of something hot. See our packing guide for specifics.

Common myths

  • "You need to be far north." All of Iceland is far enough north. Akureyri is no more likely than Vík. Cloud cover is the bigger variable.
  • "A full moon ruins it." A full moon makes weak aurora harder to see and dilutes long exposures, but it lights up the landscape beautifully and a strong display will outshine it.
  • "You can't see them with the naked eye in photos online." Strong aurora absolutely is visible to the naked eye. Weak displays often look gray-green to your eyes and saturate green only on a long exposure — this is real, not a fake; cameras integrate light differently than eyes.
